If you’ve started or are considering a home renovation, you’ve probably thought about the big things; a kitchen remodel, maybe a bathroom update. But have you considered giving your home a facelift by getting your stairs redone?

The staircase is often one of a home’s most prominent architectural features. Having an outdated or worn down staircase can take away from a home’s updated features and even deter potential homebuyers. A staircase remodel can instantly lift the appearance and aesthetics of your home. A well-maintained staircase is also an important part of keeping your home safe, as worn steps or loose parts can become dangerous.

If you’ve been searching for flooring for stairs or looking to replace your current wood stairs in Downers Grove / Bolingbrook, our staircase installers handle everything! Why Remodel Your Stairs During
Renovation?

Stairs are a beautiful architectural piece in your home, but there are many other reasons it’s a good idea to keep them updated. Whether it’s a full-scale remodel to match a home’s new look or just a new set of treads and risers, keeping your stairs in good shape is good practice as a homeowner.

  • Safety: A staircase is one of the highest traffic areas in a home, and as they become worn down over time, they can quickly become a safety hazard. Old stairs can become loose as the foundation settles, and wood stairs that aren’t maintained can become slippery. Loose holds or wobbly steps can also be dangerous. Well-kept stairs are less likely to lead to a fall, slip or other accident.
  • Home Value: In addition to making a home safe, an updated staircase is an important contributor to a home’s value. Scuffed or worn risers, broken spindles or steps that need to be refinished can lower home value.
  • Appeal: Along with increased home value, a beautiful staircase also has increased buyer appeal. If the staircase doesn’t match the rest of the home, it can be a drawback.

What is Stone Flooring?

Stone flooring may be a good choice for those who prefer an earthy feel. One can choose from many stone flooring types, including limestone, travertine, granite, marble and slate. The characteristics of those options will vary with each choice.

Limestone

Limestone flooring is a type of stone flooring that can be found in many modern-day residences. This type of stone flooring is not only popular, but also has many benefits. Limestone floors are one of the most durable types of materials due to their tough and heavy characteristics.

Limestone floors can hold up against scratches and spills, which means they do not need to be refinished as often as other materials.

Travertine

Travertine flooring is made of limestone that has been compacted and cemented together. Travertine comes in various colors, from tan, to brown, to black, each with unique characteristics.

Travertine can be challenging to install on your own due to the weight of the stone and the fact that it may not adhere if not correctly pressed down onto a surface. Travertine flooring will have a natural feel, as all the color variations come from natural impurities in the stone's formation.

Granite

Granite is an igneous rock that has formed over millions of years by the cooling and solidifying magma below Earth's surface. It is one of the hardest natural materials known to man. Granite's physical characteristics make it preferable for flooring as it has a uniform grain and texture, making each slab naturally easy to split into slabs.

The uniformity of granite also means that there are rarely any surprises with the final product because every piece will look similar to its neighbors.

Granite flooring is resistant to heat, water, scratches and stains, making it great for kitchens and bathrooms where spills are common. It is also very durable, so the stone can be used in areas with heavy traffic such as hallways or foyers without wearing down or becoming damaged easily. The surface of granite has a low porosity which makes it resistant to dirt buildup.

Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock of mineral aggregate, with variable hardness and a high natural polish. It can be used as a cheaper alternative to granite flooring.

Marble slabs are generally more economical than granite slabs. Although marble slabs have a glossy appearance, they may have a slight sheen or texture that makes them less desirable for high-traffic areas at first glance. Still, marble slabs offer many of the same benefits as granite slabs with less expense involved.

Slate

Slate flooring is a type of stone that is found in metamorphic rocks. Slate is mined from the earth and then worked to create versatile flooring options for different applications. Slate can be polished to have a high sheen, matte finish — or somewhere in between. There are also textured slates available for those who want a more rustic look without the additional cost of installation.

What Does a Stair Remodel Involve?

Choosing to remodel your staircase can be a small or large project, depending on how much work and how many things you want to change. From wood stairs to carpeting and railings, each part of the staircase can be renovated or repaired. Remodeling possibilities include:

Handrails

Whether the railings are loose, worn or just don’t fit your interior style anymore, these can all be tightened or replaced.

Newel Posts

These are the posts that hold up railings. If they are loose or broken, it can affect the whole handrail.

Balusters

Balusters are the decorative parts of handrails. Iron and wood are the most popular options for these. If you choose to replace your treads, you’ll also have to replace the balusters.

Treads and Risers

Treads and risers are the actual “steps” of a staircase, and may need to be replaced if they are wobbly or worn down.

Very professional. Nice work and was given directions how to care for the backsplash. Will be using them again to tile our hall bathroom.

I was really happy with Footprints! They installed ceramic tile in two different rooms for me. Turned out to be pretty much perfect. Both look beautiful. Kyle was our installer; his expertise was apparent and his suggestions helpful. The owner Chuck was really professional and responsive, he answered all my questions and scheduling was really easy.

Worked with them for a kitchen backsplash project, and was very happy with all aspects. Chuck was very proactive throughout the project, and his installers were always pleasant and friendly…..very easy to work with. They came 3 separate times, one day to repair the drywall, another to install the tile, and the third day to grout. Each time they finished they did a thorough clean of the kitchen, which was really appreciated. I would definitely use Footprints again.

They did absolutely great job, rushing nothing. This room had carpeting on it for 20 years, the floors were stained and in really in bad condition, I am amazed how well it came out, The tech Alex was amazing as was the owner. I have had my floors redone and wish that I knew about this company, I can see the difference in the company that you choose. Extremely professional. We selected Footprints based on the published reviews. We were not disappointed. Chuck Williams, the businesses owner, was very responsive and very knowledgeable. He made the necessary trips to inspect the project space and advise us on the proper layout of our hardwood floor given the peculiarities of our home's subfloor construction. As an engineer, I found I could trust his judgment and experience. He was also accommodating of our schedule - we did two rooms but couldn't do them at the same time. Unlike other contractors he did not charge a premium for sending his crew out a second time. The proposal and quote were very detailed with everything spelled out, no surprises. The installer did an excellent job and was very professional, cleaned up everything very well. A real plus for us was the inclusion in the quote of pick up and delivery of the flooring from the supplier. They removed all of the existing carpeting, padding, etc, eliminated all the squeaks, and thoroughly dealt with the cat urine/odor that had permeated part of one room. Was it perfect? Almost. We found (only) one spot where a wall was dinged during installation. They do not promise that there will be no such occurrences, but since we were planning to paint the walls after the installation, we did not mention this one small hiccup. We will use Footprints Floors again without hesitation. Chuck was a pleasure to work with.

I am happy to share my review on Footprints Floors. This week I had some hardwood repair under my dishwasher that had leaked. A few boards had to be replaced and I met with Chuck to discuss the project. Chuck is very knowledgeable and came by to assess the extent of damage after I moved the old dishwasher. He worked hard to match the hardwood as best he could. The floors are 25 years old but you can see the nice job he did in the attached picture. In addition he touched up a spot that had a cracked hardwood board and you can't even see the repair!! Kyle came out to do the actual job and he was thorough and really cleaned up after he was gone. I plan on having Chuck and his team replace my laundry room floors and 2 upstairs bathroom floors in 2025 with porcelain hardwood tile and expect that the craftsmanship I see on this small project will be shown once again. They really take pride in their work and it shows. I highly recommend this company to all those who want to know that their floors will be done correctly, look great and will last for years to come.

Chuck and his team did a superb job with repairs to an old floor with many missing and damaged boards and did a great job with the refininshing where there was a lot of stains. They were responsive, on time, on budget and very conscientious and it was clear they wanted it to look great at a competiitive price. I highly recommend them and would hire them again!

We are thrilled with our relationship with Footprints Floors. Both Chuck William the ower, and Kyle, his installer, have exceeded our expectations. We started with a small project to replace our master bath floor due to a toilet leak. The leak was missed by the original installer who did a new shower and floor and returned to address the leak with a new wax ring. Thanks to Chuck and Kyle they discovered a faulty sewer flange which was repaired by Stephen's Plumbing. Both agreed, if missed, we could have been looking at a new floor and posible family room ceiling. Happy with the initial project we gave Footprints new issues to solve: a leaking hall bath shower and defective broken tiles in our family room and kitchen, with no spare tiles. Chuck did the caulking and grouting to seal the hall bath leaks, and cleaned the harvested tile, and Kyle laid the new foyer flooring while harvestimg the extra tiles for the repairs. The results are outstanding. We had initially contacted another vendor for the project who ghosted us (possible the job was to small for their taste). Our win!
